On 16 September 2025, at GREEN TECHBITE: Towards EU Market, the panel discussion “Thai–EU Collaboration in BCG Sectors” gathered leading experts from Thailand and Europe to discuss how collaboration in Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Sectors can unlock Green Economy Opportunities in Germany and the EU. Moderated by Dr. Panit Kitsubun (NSTDA and Industrial Bioprocess Innovation Group (IBIG)), the session explored sustainability, innovation, and cross-border business strategies for Thai startups and SMEs entering the European market.

Opening the discussion, Ms. Siriluk Pumirat (CEO and Founder, Greenrime GmbH), highlighted the importance of changing personal habits to align with sustainable values. “If your perception is green, then today after the conference, go home, don’t use a plastic cup anymore,” Ms. Siriluk said. “Say no to the straw.” She emphasized that Europe’s mindset around sustainability is deeply embedded in daily life, which Thai entrepreneurs can learn from when building their businesses abroad.

Adding a policy perspective, Mr. Martin Gothe (Country Representative (Greater China) Start2 Group and Founder, DC Hub Limited) discussed how even small regulations reflect Europe’s strong sustainability culture. “This innovation seems funny but it represents the mindset in the European Union,” Martin said, referring to new EU regulations on plastic bottle caps. “It’s about laying the foundation for bigger achievements in sustainability.” He also encouraged Thai businesses to use landing pads and build networks before entering the EU market.

Dr.-Ing. Mark Mennenga (Deputy Head of Institute of Machine Tools and Production Technology, TU Braunschweig) emphasized that sustainability is a global challenge and cannot be solved by one country alone. “High-tech countries can play a key role in promoting sustainable technologies,” Dr. Mark said. “In the end, collaboration is always about people and values — find those who share your vision.” He encouraged Thai entrepreneurs to connect with universities in Germany as trusted networks for research and business expansion.

From a Thai industry leader’s perspective, Dr. Tispol Nakornsri (Bangkok Solar Power Co., Ltd.) shared how he built his company by following German technology leadership in the solar sector. “If you are considering seriously to invest in Europe, just go tomorrow,” Dr. Tispol said. “Germany still leads in technology, and solar energy remains the future for Thailand.” He also noted the need to overcome language barriers and cultural differences when entering the EU market.

Throughout the discussion, the panelists stressed the importance of platforms and landing pads to help startups and SMEs access new markets. Martin Gothe illustrated this point with an example from Leipzig, where the Vietnamese business community has successfully built networks to support startups. “If you want to connect Thai startups with Europe, you’ve got to provide these platforms,” Martin said. “It’s not just about funding; it’s about creating landing pads where innovation can take root.”

The conversation also highlighted regional hubs in Germany that specialize in different aspects of the green industry — from solar energy in Munich, to battery cell research in Braunschweig, to circular economy initiatives in Wolfsburg. Ms. Siriluk added her own experience from Düsseldorf, where former coal and steel areas are being transformed into renewable energy hubs with wind turbines and solar plants.

In closing, each panelist shared one tip for Thai entrepreneurs entering the EU market:

  • Dr. Tispol Nakornsri : “Europe offers higher income and faster project execution — don’t hesitate to invest.”
  • Mr. Martin Gothe : “Accept help and use landing pads. Try not to enter the EU market alone.”
  • Dr. Mark Mennenga : “Connect with universities and people who share your values — that’s how authentic partnerships grow.”
  • Ms. Siriluk Pumirat : “Germany provides funding and networks for SMEs — take advantage of exhibitor support and academic conferences to build your presence.”

The panel concluded with a clear message: Green Economy Opportunities in Germany and the EU are abundant, but Thai entrepreneurs must prioritize sustainability, build strong networks, and embrace cross-cultural collaboration to succeed.
